BAYFashion Runway Show

BAYFashion Magazine will be presenting a runway fashion show dubbed CLHS 2013 (Coolest Looks & Hottest Styles) at the luxurious Palace Hotel in downtown San Francisco this Friday May 3rd. 10 designer from New York to the Ukraine will showcase their hottest looks for 2013 Fall/Winter & 2014 Spring/Summer collections.

Featured designers include Christope Guillarme, David August, Cory Couture, Felix Rodionov, Bacca Da Silva, Cityzen by Azin, and Maisha Bahati,

The event will start with a pre-show VIP Party sponsored by Lamborghini. This pre-show party will also host the unveiling of the latest Lamborghini Model. Perfectly Coifed Couture

Fashion showcases typically rely heavily upon designer focus as the main attraction; however beauty gurus, Nikki Tran and Ling Chan aim to adjust that perception by bringing recognition to the devil in the details, with their May 18^th Crѐateur showcase.

Hair, makeup and fashion design are undeniably intertwined in the beauty industry. Nikki & Ling wanted to make that connection clear by producing a fashion event that presents their dynamic hair and makeup styles, as show-stopping artistic designs.

These beauty gurus push the edge with futuristic hair styles accented by creative makeup creations. They incorporated that inspiration into the show, featuring one of kind couture fashions by local designer Yennie Zouh. The unconventional use of materials like nails, tile and tissue paper make Yennie’s pieces the perfect collection to be showcased at Crѐateur.

These girls are on fire, literally. The fashion trio worked together previously to create an edgy pictorial depicting Yennie’s paper dress engulfed in flames.

According to Ling, “part of the concept of the photo shoot was to use real fire, so that the picture would convey, real emotion, through the hair and makeup.”

Photographer Tom Huynh certainly captured this emotion. Can you imagine what an inferno would look like walking the runway?

I can’t promise burning flames at Crѐateur, even though that would be really cool. What I can promise is that it’s going to be one hot show. What you can expect from Crѐateur is the unexpected.

A Deep Bow to Lilly Pulitzer

Clothing designer Lilly Pulitzer, 81 passed away yesterday. Pulitzer was known for her tropical prints in technicolor wave lengths. According to the New York Times, Lilly Pulitzer made more than 15 million in revenue at the height of her success. While she was popular during the time of the “flower child” of the 60s and disco divas of the 70s, Lily Pulitzer’s designs stood the test of time and remains profitable today. You may remember her 2010 collection at Target full of designs inspired by a vacation by the sea. SACFW Covers The Art of Fashion: Jason Wu

When Sacramento Fashion Week first got the official invite to “The Art of Fashion: Jason Wu”, we were more than thrilled. His most recent accomplishments include dressing first lady Michelle Obama for the second time at this year’s inaugural ball. This accomplishment was significant for his career seeing as Michelle Obama is currently one of the biggest style icons and it therefore shows that his clothes not only work well in the social sphere but also in the political sphere. Seeing as Sacramento is a politically driven city, we felt like this event couldn’t be more relevant to our interests.

The extravagant event put on by Neiman Marcus and The San Francisco Opera took place at San Francisco City Hall. “This San Francisco history-making event will be talked about for years—already the buzz is incredible!” said San Francisco Opera Guild President Karen Kubin. The proceeds of this spectacular evening will directly benefit the 50,000 students that San Francisco Opera Guild reaches each year with our award-winning music education programs. We are giving voice to potential, and we are so grateful for Neiman Marcus and Jason Wu’s support.”

This charitable event will have a positive impact on the lives of many children, helping the entire community by working to build a better future. This set the tone for the event. Everyone was giving, it felt like everyone was generous, most of all Jason Wu for volunteering time from his busy schedule to appear at this event. San Francisco Opera Guild President Karen Kubin confirmed this assessment, noting that he had a positive demeanor and was a great person to work with.

When guests made their way up the grandiose staircase to the Rotunda, they were treated to delectable h’orderves served by crisply dressed waiters. The guests wore an amazing selection of clothing, with choices ranging from elegant dresses by seasoned designers to sleek looks from recent collections. When it came close to 7pm, ushers directed the guests to the right room called the North Light Court where the fashion show would commence. Guests quickly found their seat, and San Francisco Opera Guild President Karen Kubin expressed her gratitude on behalf of the opera and event sponsors. After this, the show immediately began, featuring a series of designs characterized by such themes as polka-dots, sheer fabrics, and solid colors.

While the audience certainly enjoyed everything Jason Wu had to offer, it was the elegant, flowing dresses that drew the loudest applause in the room. Nonetheless, it was still impressive that his eye for fashion extended to outfits suitable for any occasion at any time of the day. When the show came to a close, Jason Wu stepped forward to acknowledge the audience with a wave and a bow before quickly stepping backstage again. Before the guests made their way back to the Rotunda for a night of dancing and fine food, a charity auction was held to raise even more money for local music programs.

Being at such a high-end event held in San Francisco was an encouraging sign that Northern California has finally started receiving the attention it deserves from the fashion industry. All of the guests had fun, many children will benefit from the funds raised in support of local music programs. This event will certainly have many positive implications in both the local community of San Francisco and fashion communities across the area, including the ever-growing Sacramento fashion scene.

My World Changed: Louis Vuitton’s Fall 2013 Showcase

Every great once in a while, there’s a fashion showcase capable of having a lasting and deep impact on its audience. Oh, I know that sounds dramatic, but for those of us who hold beautiful things dear, it’s no exaggeration. Clothes, really remarkable and well-made clothes, have the ability to change me, altering my very perception of the world. It doesn’t happen often, the last occasion I can recall was Louis Vuitton’s Spring/Summer Cruise collection from 2011. This collection was unmistakably vintage inspired, hurling viewers back to a time of Grace Kelly circa “To Catch a Thief.” This collection changed me, developed my ambitions and raised my standards for living and I haven’t been the same since.

Obviously, a transformation of this scale is rare. I have, however, recently been altered once again, and by none-other than Louis Vuitton. The 2013 Fall collection debuted by Louis Vuitton is, for me, nothing less than world-changing. I am often a fan of Louis Vuitton’s couture, but only 2011’s Spring/Summer campaign and this recent Fall collection can be considered in some part responsible for whomever I eventually become at the end of my life.

The showcase begins in a dark room lined with doors surrounding a U shaped audience. Lights turn on and a door opens as subtle, dramatically stirring piano music begins to play. The stage’s doors, from which the models immerged, distinctly resembled that of something one might find in a 1940’s film featuring Barbara Stanwick. It’s no coincidence I found myself transported to a time gone by, when clothes were immaculately tailored and only hinted to the sex appeal suggested by the forms beneath the garments. The first to immerge from a door is a perfect blend of classical sophistication and nearly unbearable femininity with a modern silhouette, capable of summing up the entire collection. Each ensemble following is as stunning as the one before. Unexpected pairings of sleek, simplified slip dresses in charming florals and subtle fall shades of taupe, burgundy and slate grey are juxtaposed with chunky wool coats with fur linings and lapels. My personal favorite pattern shown was a beautiful navy blue silk with what seemed to be tiny, sporadically placed, pale lavender colored rosebuds. This fabric, and subtle variations of it, appeared on a slip dress, a staple pencil skirt and a suit of a jacket and shorts, all of which I would count myself unbelievably fortunate to own.

Whether it was a fur covered Speedy handbag, a classic calf-length coat or a tastefully skimpy little silk number edged in lace, the entire collection was something deserving of the deafening applause it received. Should I be so fortunate to find success in whatever it is I end up pursuing professionally, I hope with every corner of my soul I can reward myself with a piece from this remarkable and inspiring collection.

Fashion Week’s Showcase Low-down

As of Saturday, March 2^nd, we bid farewell to our beloved Sacramento’s Fashion Week events. And I don’t know about the rest of you, but I’m exhausted. So much couture and fresh fashion creation at one time can certainly wear a girl down. Events began with our launch party on Sunday, the 24^th of February and Sac Fashion Week held events nightly, leading up to two positively stunning Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter runway showcases, which took place Friday and Saturday nights. I was fortunate enough to attend Friday’s runway event and, if you’ll excuse me a moment while I collect the shrapnel of my mind as it has been blown to smithereens by what I saw.

Featuring entirely local designers hand plucked by our brilliant team of producers, these designers were chosen for their flair and talent, worthy and deserving of the runway. Friday’s show presented Rebecca Cahua, Monica Buo, Maisha Bahati, Britboy Fashion, Niv Elliot, Samuel Parkinson’s Kingstribe and Nelli Rosh.

But before my eyes were dried for lack of blinking during the runway show, I was among the elite permitted access to a VIP pool party. Yes, I did say pool party, however no swimwear was required for this chic and edgy gathering of Sacramento’s finest fashion seeking attendees. The VIP party took place in the drained pool and spa area located in the basement of the lovely and accommodating Elks Tower. The surroundings for this pre-show mix and mingle were positively cool with a hip, subversive feel as though you were permitted access to the hottest underground event anybody who’s anybody knows about. Cocktail tables were set up within the large drained pool and two drained spas with sparkling chandeliers hanging above. Displayed on the walls were images of graphiti art, depicting faces with outrageous hair and sunglasses. On an upper level was a DJ, soaking the room with rhythmic, modern beats, beckoning you to grab champagne and commence rubbing elbows with Fashion’s elite.

After immersing oneself in what felt like the epitome of chic downstairs, I joined the rest of the attendees as we took our seats around the runway, anxiously awaiting the start of the show. Bright lights and intoxicating music subsided for a brief moment, and then resumed as the first model pounded down the runway with panache and swagger, telling everyone the show had just begun.

Among the many talents showcased, I personally favored Niv Elliot, Kingstribe by Samuel Parkinson and Nelli Rosh. Niv’ Elliot’s showcase featured surprising elements married with precise and meticulous construction. I particularly enjoyed the pieces with the striking, reflective material. One ensemble featured an entire skirt of this unusual material and photographed beautifully. It doesn’t take much for me to appreciate fashion, but it takes particular cohesion of creation and quality to make me think to myself, “I would like to wear that,” and Niv’s pieces did just that. Kingstribe was remarkable in the obvious demonstration of precision and quality in his garments. His use of color was also eye-catching and demanded attention and admiration. It’s always a pleasure to see well-constructed jackets and pants walk down the runway with ease and style. I couldn’t help but to take notice of how comfortable and confident the models seemed to look in his pieces. Nelli Rosh’s designs were so artistic they seemed almost confectionary as they strode the runway. Presenting dresses and formal wear, Rosh’s designs were as unique and varied as the models who donned them. Some outrageous and artful, others historically inspired and cutting edge, these garments each stood apart with remarkable elegance. Though difficult to choose, my personal favorite was what appeared to be a 17^th century inspired purple and indigo blue dress, which looked worthy of Marie Antoinette herself. What I found so inspiring about this piece was the sense it belonged both on a red carpet and smack dab in the middle of a high-budget Hollywood film based in 17^th century France.

Upon wrapping up the show, attendees were invited to two post-event parties, The Official after party was held at Mix Downtown and a VIP Gala took place at the lovely, Citizen Hotel. Having chosen the Citizen’s posh party, I mingled with attendees, Fashion Week staff and models from the show. There I enjoyed live music, sipped more champagne and buzzed and chatted with everyone about our favorite showcases, wrapping up a spectacular evening.

A job well done to our designers, producers and the many, many hands involved in the production of what has quickly become a must-see event. My hat’s off to you as I impatiently look forward to Sacramento’s next runway showcase.

SACFW and “The Art of Fashion: Jason Wu”

Sacramento Fashion Week will be attending “The Art of Fashion: Jason Wu”. This gala put on by both the San Francisco Opera Guild and Neiman Marcus Union Square will feature a fashion show, a full buffet and dancing at the impressive San Francisco City Hall. The event will definitely go down in California’s fashion history book as this is the first time that Jason Wu has showed a collection in the Bay Area.
