Tadashi Shoji’s designs are known for being luxurious and elegant and his F/W 2012 collection at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week did not disappoint. Drop waisted dresses, knee length skirts, lacey material, delicate beading and rich jewel tones all set the mood for the romantic and sexy collection reminiscent of early 20th century fashion. The distinguished designer did a brilliant job of mixing vintage styles with modern edge for this collection. He took significant pieces from this era and re-created them in a modern way, producing garments that are marketable and desirable for today’s time.

Shoji’s floral prints were done digitally with inspiration stemming from a Chinese painting. The intricate detail in the lace gowns were aesthetically pleasing and highlighted his attention to detail.

The two show stoppers of the collection were a black gown with a plunging necklace of Venetian lace, which the designer deemed “covered up but still sexy,” as well as a metallic gold and black long sleeved gown.

Shoji incorporated other elements into the show to create a romantic and vintage atmosphere for the runway. A lace pattern was projected onto the wall and whimsical music played as the models floated across the runway. The makeup was mostly subtle except for a bold red lip. The hair was placed in a low romantic bun that lead hairstylist Rodney Cutler dubbed the “down do”. You can watch the full Tadashi Shoji F/W 2012 runway show here.

What if I told you about a collection that infuses secretary-like structure with girlish whimsy? Would you also believe me if I told you that some of the collection’s most notable colors are mustard and teal? You might think I was a little loopy. Or, you may have seen Carven’s Pre-Fall 2012 collection, where designer Guillaume Henry so expertly pulled together all four of these aspects among several others.

images via Vogue.com

Before we jump into a swoon-fest over all the opulent materials, let’s back up a little. Established by Carmen de Tommaso in Paris during the middle of the 20th Century, Carven has always been known for simplicity and an interesting use of proportion. The brand has a global reputation for high-quality garments as well as inventive designs. Interesting, right? When first established, Carven only made haute couture. As of 2010, Carven has preserved the spirit of couture but now makes ready-to-wear –which I am more than ready to wear. For more history of vintage Carven tip toe your way to Vintage Fashion Guild.

Zooming to the present, feel free to go ahead and take a look through Vogue’s slide-show of the Pre-Fall collection. Each and every piece is less than amazing. The whole collection has diverse yet cohesive color combinations including different shades of white, yellows and blues and blacks. And while the colors of the collection not gloomy like winter can sometimes be, the textures and materials are a reminder that they are mainly meant to be worn during the chilly winter.

It is apparent that though staple pieces such as a pea-coat (shown above) that Carven is truly now ready to wear. However, through exquisite details such as the more abstracted collar is evidence that they still have retained a hint of couture. To me this sounds like the perfect recipe for a perfect piece. I can’t think of anything better to wear while walking around town next Fall. Nothing could be more picturesque than wearing this mustard coat over a sweater dress with some chunky heels. Or perhaps for a more casual look with some dark skinny jeans and simple flats. Though, be warned: as much as you try to dress down a powerhouse label like Carven, it’s still going to exude delicacy. At the end of next summer, when I start looking for autumnal accouterments, you know where I’ll be looking to for inspiration.

by: Bridgett Rex – Editor in Chief

As much as some of us may try to hide from the facts, it is safe to say that we have all been expert procrastinators at some point. All of us have had our share of events when we arrived “fashionably late”, and in those moments of panic that often accompany these actions, we would have loved to have someone reaching out to save us from the horrible mess. So yes, the big showcases are today, but we can come proudly prepared in any case! Great procrastinators of the Sacramento area, have no fear, for the Sac Fashion Week Guide is here!

Bippity Boppity Boo
While we would like to fantasize that with a loud whistle or wave of the hand a cab will immediately roll up to the curb to whisk us home, it takes a bit more work than that.

There are a large number of different cab services circulating in and around Sacramento, but I recommend Yellow Cab for any taxi needs. As a warning, they are definitely not the cheapest option, but the company is well-established and has a reputation for great service. Their website even allows you to calculate your likely fare! This brings us to the next tip:
Bring CASH.
You always should have a little cash on your person for emergencies. In this case, you should have enough for the cab and tip as well, saving you the worries of using a credit card. To travel cheaper, attend with your friends or plan with someone you know that you live near and share the fair!
Here is the link to Google maps. The address to the charming Elks Tower is 921 11th St Sacramento, CA 95814. Not only will this help ensure that your cab takes you there quickly and efficiently, but if you choose to use public transportation instead, Google maps is also a great resource for finding different potential routes.

A Breath of Fresh Air
When you are “rubbing shoulders” with other attendees, impressions definitely matter whether the goal is new friendship or professional networking. To that end, not only do you have to look presentable a great outfit, but you should also be conversation ready.

While gum is good, cute little mints are the more professional choice and guarantees minty fresh breath. While gum may do the same, chewing on some gum isn’t good etiquette. They are much more secretive and easy to get rid of quickly should you decide to grab a drink. But don’t forget, the best accessory you can show off is your smile. Everyone likes a positive attitude, so don’t be shy and crack a smile!

Rest Assured

Whether it is nerves or the decision to dance the night away that causes you to sweat, the shine from perspiration always tends to mess up the photos. Believe it or not, toilet seat covers make excellent blotching paper for your face. The best part about this is that you don’t have to go scouting for them at the store, as they are guaranteed to be there all night. So don’t let your dancing gleam outshine you!

Hungry to Party

The first after-party for Sacramento Fashion Week could not be planned at a neater place. The Mix in downtown Sacramento not only has an exquisite inside/outside venue, but even better is that Friday night means $19 Pitcher Party (serves 4). Perhaps the drink isn’t enough? Small plates are available until 11pm on Saturdays. allowing you to squeeze in an order right after the showcases are done.

Even with the light appetizers practically on-site, you may still be a bit hungry after it is all over. Luckily, De Veres Irish Pub is open until 2am and is a hop and a skip away If instead you have a hankering for Japanese cuisine, Sapporo grill is a just as close and scrumptious, though they are only open until midnight.

Whatever you decide for your main meals, I suggest carrying a little snack such as a cereal bar or some crackers, because it never hurts to have something for an emergency. That way you’ll be able to focus on the amazing show rather than your angry stomach!

Can’t you just smell that fresh, warm spring air? Maybe not quite yet, but there’s no denying the fashion world has shed those chunky, winter layers and opted for bright hues and light fabrics. While February still has us enduring chilly breezes and soggy gray days, there are some fun and functional ways to brighten up your closet’s case of the winter blahs.

As much as we yearn for lightweight spring outfits, that rainy forecast calls for a coat. Here are some sensible outerwear options, which add a layer of spring style to your ensemble.

Cute patterns, saturated hues, light neutrals and indispensable denim can keep your mind on a warm spring day while keeping out those lingering winter breezes.
Accessories also have the ability to take a look from fall to fresh. Hats, in addition to keeping your mug dry and aiding you on those less than perfect hair days they can add a sense of season to your wardrobe.

Heavier wools and thick knits make perfect cold weather companions while straw and canvas materials on large brim hats and fedoras speak to spring and summer seasons. Adding a hat is a perfect finishing touch to nearly any outfit and, admittedly, seems to make us feel a bit more glamorous.
Since rain is one of later winter and early spring’s inevitability’s, it makes sense to carry something to keep dry during downpours. But there are umbrellas …and then there are umbrellas! Here are some examples of the latter.

Because it’s one of those less common accessories, umbrella designs allow for a more fun attitude and unexpected possibilities. Bright colors, bold shapes and cute designs all conspire in these functional pieces to turn those gray skies blue again.
Just because it’s raining doesn’t mean you’re only left with shoe options involving rubber boots and galoshes. Slightly more fashion forward water resistant options come in the form of Sperry Top Sider boat shoes.

Originally intended for damp boat decks, these comfortable cuties keep feet dry. And, in a plethora of patterns, designs and colors, they’re sure to hit the mark for any casual outfit.
While waiting for warmer days, these delightful accessories can help to survive those seemingly endless transitional months. There’s no doubt small pieces make a big difference in keeping your look fresh and ready for the next season.

With strong statement pieces like a sheer studded top and bright tribal print shorts, some people would choose to play it safe and pair these items with a simple, quiet piece to balance it out. Reychelle is not one of these people. Instead, she takes both of these pieces and pairs them together creating a fun and unique look.

“I was leafing through a rack of clothes at home and came across a sheer top with studs on the front. I assumed that my sister left it on my rack to dispose of it. Then, I realized an amazing piece landed into my hands, so of course I had to wear it today. In terms of the shorts, I love prints like florals and tribal. The ring was just an accessory that I couldn’t walk out of Heart without owning.”

Reychelle does a lot of her shopping at thrift stores but makes sure to support local businesses by shopping in Sacramento boutiques such as Cuffs, Crazy Marys and Goodstock. However, Heart is her most favorite boutique in downtown Sacramento.

When asked about what she builds her daily look around, Reychelle stated, “I lay in bed for awhile until I think of a grandpa sweater or a pair of high waisted shorts and then I’ll base my outfit around that one piece. If I ever get bored of staring at my closet and trying on a couple things, I’ll just go into my mom’s or my little brothers wardrobe to see if anything sparks interest.”

Reychelle’s style is fun, intriguing and detailed. Not only does she prove that it’s good to be bold and take risks with your style, but she also shows how to have fun too.

It likely comes as no surprise that the picture above and to the left is what many people visualize when they hear the word “fashion”. A runway size 0, or designer sample size 2, is common in the fashion industry. On the flip side, plus size clothing usually displays women sizes 14 and 16 in their ads. So what about the middle? Neither of these two markets caters to women between sizes 4 and 12, a range that, as reported in a previous blog by Nashay Bouie, represents a significant portion of American women.

The controversial aspect of changing models’ appearance to match specific body types is an issue the comes up constantly. Why can’t the ads be made with the model’s real body? On the converse, the same has happened in the plus size world of fashion with models being forced to gain weight in order to be booked in their market. If they do not gain weight, they might instead have to wear padding during photo-shoots to look fuller.

The pictures above show Katie Halchishick, a model who can certainly attest to this concern. Starting off as a plus size model, Halchishick was told she needed to gain between 15-20 pounds to be marketable and book jobs. In doing so she hit a weight of 200 pounds at a size 14. In this state, she was in high demand and booked an extensive amount of work. When she lost 50 pounds and became a size 8, she entered “ model limbo” and had to either wear padding to book plus size jobs, or force her weight down even further to a size 4 to book mainstream commercial work.

So what happens when models get stuck in model limbo? Well unfortunately, they usually stay there. They book the occasional department-store catalogue or diet pill ad, but rarely do they see the attention they would if they fit into the two main molds. But few women in America are themselves part of these two extreme categories. When looking at an ad for high fashion, women of “common” sizes may find it hard to picture themselves in a runway look and plus size women may not be able to picture themselves in a size 8 or 10. This is why Katie Halchishick started her own agency catering to all women stuck in model limbo.

Natural Model Management promotes the mantra of “Healthy is the new skinny” and represents models within the size range they are not being represented by in the rest of the fashion world.

Each women throughout the world is a different size, shape, personality, hair color, eye color, profession, and values. Truthfully, the list could go on forever. So why try to stuff women into one or two molds? All women should be represented as beautiful. Every shape, size, and race should have a forum to showcase their beauty. Perhaps natural model management will provide this arena.

Admit it, you’re looking forward to Valentine’s Day. After all, it can be more than a greeting card inspired holiday. Whether you choose a night on the town with your beau, or a wild time with the girls or even a low key dinner and a movie, Valentine’s day can be a great opportunity to show off what your closet’s got. No matter what your plans are, there’s a perfect outfit to wear.

Who says only spoken for gals get to have all the fun on Valentine’s? If you’re going out with the gals try an edgy, sophisticated look with elegant colored trousers, a printed cami, dressy cardi and fun of accessories.

Not such a girly-girl? Or perhaps planning a simple movie date with your husband and don’t feel like setting off the sprinklers? Head toward boyfriend jeans, an interesting top and a cozy wrap as shown here and you’ll be comfortable and frill free all night.

Then again, this day only comes once a year and certainly presents endless fashion possibilities. Why not take it all the way with a flirty, feminine, red crochet top dress? Feel free to add heart-stopping jewelry and a cute chunky shoe for some edge. With these items, you will surely be in the mood for love.

For those of us looking for a sophisticated and mature ensemble, go to the unfailing LBD. A striped jersey jacket keeps things tailored. Finish it off with a muted pink clutch, neutral bootie and clean, stainless jewelry for a timeless aesthetic.

Whether you buy into this kind of holiday or not, there’s no denying we all love finding a good excuse to doll ourselves up. In fact, a very intriguing article by eharmony.com discusses the resemblance of Valentine’s Day for women to men’s beloved Super Bowl. Most men believe women require chocolates and roses on this day. As great source writes, the real treat about Valentine’s is the opportunity to break out of the everyday. It is a day to feel extra special and give our fellas reason to admire us. So take some chances this holiday, be flirty, comfy or sophisticated. But no matter what you do, be sure it shows you off and keeps you feeling worthy of those secret admirers.

Moore Please

We love our skirts, adore our dresses and favor a great pair of shorts. But there’s one invaluable member of every woman’s closet and that’s the slim silhouette of Capri pants. After decades of turning to these sure-fire slenderizers, it’s a wonder more women don’t seek to pat the back of the woman responsible for their continued existence. But to whom would we owe our gratitude for their popularization? The most likely source is Mary Tyler Moore, or better known as Laura Petrie of the classic sitcom The Dick Van Dyke Show.

While most classic TV housewives were known for their dressy, sophisticated aesthetic, Mary Tyler Moore set a new and controversial standard for domestic style. With dark, slim and very fitted pants, Moore represented a realistic wife and mother without sacrificing a single ounce of chic. According to this women’s history article, Moore’s insistence on portraying a woman at home who wasn’t vacuuming in a dress, heels and a string of pearls set in motion a nation of wives proud to adorn themselves with flattering, feminine clothes Mrs. Cleaver wouldn’t dream of wearing.

In fact, this Mail online article highlighted Moore’s recent Screen Actor’s Guild recognition. They describe how because her pants were so effectively flattering, she was limited to wearing her Capri’s in only one scene per episode for fear of their being too provocative. This is proof that a woman does not have to perpetuate unrealistic ideals in order to emanate femininity and polished style.

Of course it isn’t just pant ensembles like these (below) that we have come to covet.

Moore unfailingly exuded chic comfort and utterly timeless elegance in all her fashion endeavors. Moore was also known for the delicate back details, which seemed to embellish all of her shells, blouses and sweaters. Equally loved garments are simple, universally flattering dresses like these and long, lean pencil skirts paired with tailored tops.

For the duration of five stylishly scintillating seasons, Moore became known as one of the most important style icons of her era. Fashion always glances back and for that, my closet and I are eternally grateful.

Sacramento Fashion Week is almost here! The excitement is building up and it can’t come soon enough. However, there have been a few fashion weeks all over the world that have already had successful outcomes.

Hong Kong Fashion Week 2012 for Fall and Winter was from January 16th-19th. Organized by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, it is the world’s second largest and Asia’s largest fashion event . Over 1,900 exhibitors from 26 countries displayed their collections at Hong Kong Fashion Week.

The design theme of this year’s fashion week was “World Boutique.” With such a wide variety of designers showcasing their talents it is hard to decide which collections was the best. However, Hidy Ng, a Hong Kong based designer really stood out among the already talented crowd.

Something about the pure elegance, use of soft, flowy fabrics, and cool tone colors in her garments attracted me to her collection. Her clothes can make any wearer feel like royalty. To finish off a Hidy Ng look, all you would need is a cup of tea, royal jewels and elegant heels to be fit for a queen.
